FAQs Answered by Pharmacists: Children’s Probiotics for Gut & Immune Health
Why do babies and children need probiotics?
Babies and children are still developing their gut microbiome—the collection of helpful bacteria in their digestive systems. Probiotics support this process, helping digestion and nutrient absorption while also playing a key role in building a healthy immune system.
What is the benefit of adding Vitamin D to a probiotic?
Vitamin D helps strengthen bones and supports the immune system. Since many children don’t get enough sun exposure year-round, a supplement that includes Vitamin D can help fill the gap, especially during cold seasons when colds and flu are more common.
Can probiotics help with tummy problems like colic, constipation, or diarrhoea?
Yes. Specific probiotic strains can help reduce colic symptoms in babies and support more regular bowel movements in both infants and children. They work by balancing gut bacteria, which helps reduce gas, ease bloating, and improve stool consistency.
Are powdered probiotics safe for newborns and infants?
Yes, when formulated specifically for young children, like this product. The included strains are gentle and well-studied for babies. However, it’s always best to check with a paediatrician before starting any supplement in very young or premature infants, or those with special medical needs.
How do I know if probiotics are working for my child?
Changes can be subtle but may include fewer tummy upsets, more regular poops, fewer colds, or improved skin if your child has eczema. Benefits may take 1–3 weeks to become noticeable, and consistent daily use offers the best results.
Can probiotics be taken with antibiotics?
Yes, but they should be taken a few hours apart. Antibiotics kill both bad and good bacteria. Probiotics can help restore balance and reduce the chance of diarrhoea or tummy discomfort during and after antibiotic treatment.
What should I look out for when choosing a children’s probiotic?
Choose a probiotic with clinically researched strains suitable for a child’s age group, no added sugars or artificial ingredients, and a delivery method that’s easy to mix with food or drink. Bonus if it includes added prebiotics (like FOS), which feed the good bacteria in the gut.
