Pharmacist FAQs Answered

When should I use Optrex Sore Eye Drops for the best effect?

Optrex Sore Eye Drops are ideal whenever your eyes sting or feel sore – i.e., after a dusty car trip or when reading or working on close-up displays (e.g., computer screens). The drops contain witch hazel (Hamamelis), giving a cooling, astringent effect to help soothe irritation. Place 1–2 drops in each eye immediately when you experience discomfort, and blink to spread the solution. They may be used as often as you like, even every few hours. To be most effective, close your eyes for a short time after instilling the drops, and then slowly open them, allowing the relaxing effect to take hold. They are gentle and safe to use by adults and older children if required.

Can I use them in prolonged screen use or workdays?

Yes. Staring at screens or doing near work for several hours can dry out your eyes – the layer of tears dries out faster, irritating. In addition to taking breaks regularly (e.g., the 20-20-20 rule), you can use Optrex Sore Eye Drops in the course of a workday. When your eyes are fatigued or gritty, squeeze a single or double drop into each eye. The cooling effect will soothe and calm your eyes. Remember to blink often and change the brightness of your screen to reduce glare. For example, keep a bottle at your desk so you can reach it at any time. The breaks, correct lighting, and these drops together make your eyes comfortable all day long.

In what ways are Optrex Sore Eye Drops different from dry eye?

Optrex Sore Eye Drops are for general irritation, while dry-eye and allergy drops are for separate uses. The Sore Eye solution utilises witch hazel, which constricts blood vessels and helps calm irritation. It does not moisturise like a gel. Dry-eye drops (such as Optrex Intensive or Double Action) are designed to lubricate and hydrate the eye with special polymers or gels, and they typically state that they are safe for use with contact lenses. Allergy drops (for example, Optrex Allergy or Hayfever Relief) contain medications such as sodium cromoglicate to prevent histamine release and alleviate itching. In short, apply Sore Eye Drops if you feel irritated because of dryness, smoke, or effort; apply dry-eye drops if your eyes are dehydrated; and apply allergy drops if you have watery, itchy, allergy eyes.

Are Optrex Sore Eye Drops safe with contact lenses?

Do not put Optrex Sore Eye Drops in while wearing contact lenses. Remove your lenses and then put in the drops, wait for about 10–15 minutes, and put your lenses back in. Giving your eyes a break means they have time to absorb the drops, preventing the preservative from becoming stuck to your lenses. If you wear contacts frequently, you can use contact-wear lubricating drops during the day and reserve the Sore Eye Drops for lens-free periods. Check the bottle for the drops – it will advise whether the drops are contact-friendly or not. This keeps your eyes and contacts comfortable.

How do I use Optrex Sore Eye Drops when I am overseas or in hay fever season?

On trips, pack your 10ml bottle in your carry-on; small bottles of less than 100ml are permitted on flights. Air in the cabin is dehydrated, so use drops in flight if your eyes begin to feel red and gritty. Also, stay hydrated with lots of water and consider glasses over contacts when flying to minimise dryness. During allergy season, these drops won’t stop an allergy reaction, but they can help flush out pollen or dust. After being outside, put a drop or two in each eye to rinse irritants and soothe discomfort. Eye experts note that lubricating drops can help wash allergens from your eyes and keep them moist. Additionally, wearing wraparound sunglasses outdoors can help block pollen from entering your eyes. Continue taking any medicine for allergies that your doctor recommends, and apply the drops as often as needed to relieve itchy eyes caused by flying or allergies.
