Product Summary

Strepsils Honey & Lemon Lozenges contain two antiseptic ingredients for the symptomatic relief of mouth and throat infections.

These ingredients are both mild antiseptics which kill the bacteria associated with mouth and throat infections.

The action of sucking the lozenge allows the active ingredients to work in the area of the discomfort and also helps lubricate and soothe the painful area.

This helps relieve the soreness and discomfort of mouth and throat infections.

Directions

  • Adults, children (over 6 years old) and the elderly: One lozenge to be dissolved slowly in the mouth every 2–3 hours up to a maximum of 12 lozenges in 24 hours.
  • This product is not recommended for children under 6 years. Remember that young children can choke on lozenges.
  • If symptoms persist, have not improved, or have worsened after 3 days, consult a doctor or pharmacist.

Pharmacist FAQs Answered

Can I Take Strepsils for an Allergic or Irritant Sore Throat?

Yes, you can take Strepsils to soothe sore throats caused by non-infectious reasons such as allergies, pollution, or dry air. Though the antiseptic ingredients mainly target bacteria, the lozenges also act by keeping your throat moist and relieving the scratchy or dry feeling. They won't treat the reason behind sore throats in the case of allergies, though. If your sore throat results from hay fever, dust mites, or some other allergen, then you will also need an antihistamine. Discuss the cause of your sore throat with your pharmacist so that you get the most effective relief and cure for your condition.

Is It Suitable to Take Strepsils Daily for Extended Periods?

Strepsils must be used only for a short while if you have a throat infection or sore throat. Now and then, their use when the symptoms come back is generally alright. But using them day after day, never stopping, is not a good idea. Overusing them can lead to excessive sugar intake and may cause discomfort in your mouth or an upset stomach. If your throat issue lasts more than three days or keeps recurring, it may indicate an underlying cause, such as allergies, acid reflux, or a chronic infection. Always consult a doctor if you experience persistent or recurring symptoms.

Do Strepsils Stop Coughing or Loss of Voice?

Strepsils are mainly designed to stop sore throats and soothe irritation. While they are not intended to stop coughing, they can help alleviate dry or tickly coughs by soothing the throat. This might also help if you’ve lost your voice or have hoarseness due to irritation or strain, such as from shouting or singing. They don’t treat deeper causes like chest infections or laryngitis, so speak to a pharmacist if your symptoms include chesty coughs or you’re struggling to speak clearly for more than a few days.

Are Strepsils Suitable for People with Diabetes?

Strepsils contain sucrose and glucose, both of which are sugars. Each one contains about 2.4 grams of sugar in total. This will affect blood sugar levels and hence must be taken with caution by diabetics. Sugar-free lozenges for the throat are available, and a pharmacist can recommend a suitable alternative if you are managing your sugar intake naturally. If you are unsure whether these lozenges are safe for your condition, consult your pharmacist or physician.

Can I have hot drinks or food with Strepsils?

Yes, you can have warm liquids when taking Strepsils, and they may even help soothe your throat. Just don't chew or swallow the lozenge with a meal or beverage, as it is best to let it dissolve slowly in the mouth. Allowing it to dissolve slowly gives the active ingredients time to work in the throat area. Scalding hot drinks also numb your throat or mouth briefly, so be careful not to burn yourself. Sipping warm teas or soups between doses is usually okay and can help to increase comfort.

Can Strepsils Be Used In Combination with Natural Remedies?

Yes, it is safe to take Strepsils in conjunction with home remedies such as honey, lemon water, or herbal teas. These home remedies may help soothe your throat even better. Honey and lemon in particular can help relieve dryness and soreness, while herbal teas like chamomile or ginger can give you soothing relief. Natural remedies, however, should never be used in place of the lozenges if antiseptic action is required. Applying them together may provide added relief, but never apply more than necessary or combine with other lozenges without consulting a professional.

How Do Strepsils Differ From Other Throat Sprays or Lozenges?

Strepsils contain antiseptic ingredients which combat bacteria in minor throat infections. Other lozenges are likely to address pain alone or contain anaesthetic ingredients to numb the throat. Sprays are likely to target deeper tissues and may contain anti-inflammatory or numbing ingredients. Choosing the proper product depends on your symptoms. If your main complaint is throat pain and a slight infection, Strepsils would be a suitable option. If you need more effective painkillers or to treat swelling and tonsillitis, other brands may be more appropriate. Get advice from your pharmacist as to what is best for you.
