Benzocaine Gel for Mouth Sore Relief

Benzocaine oral products are generally intended for adults and children age 2 and older, although directions and age restrictions vary by product. Children should use these products only according to the product label and with appropriate adult supervision.

Benzocaine products should not be used in children younger than 2 years and should not be used for teething pain.

Benzocaine is a local anesthetic. It temporarily numbs the area where it is applied, which can reduce pain and discomfort from a mouth sore or minor oral irritation.

Talk with a doctor, dentist, or pharmacist if mouth sores are severe, keep returning, last longer than expected, or are accompanied by fever, swelling, difficulty swallowing, or other concerning symptoms.

Benzocaine may cause irritation or an allergic reaction in some people.

Rarely, benzocaine can cause a serious condition called methemoglobinemia, which reduces the blood's ability to carry oxygen. Symptoms can include pale, gray, or blue-colored skin, lips, or nail beds; shortness of breath; headache; tiredness; confusion; or a fast heartbeat.

Stop using the product and seek immediate medical attention if these symptoms occur. Call 911 for severe difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness, or other signs of a medical emergency.
